Baldness is a state of lack of hair.

The most common form of baldness is a progressive thinning of the hair called androgenetic alopecia, which affects the adult male of men and other species.
The severity and nature of baldness varies greatly, going d alopecia androgenetic, areata  alopecia (which brings the loss of some hair),  alopecia total (that causes total hair loss), until  alopecia universal (causing the total loss of hair and all body hair).

The hair loss progresses gradually and may be mottled or diffuse. Approximately, are lost about 100 hairs a day. The average scalp contains 100,000 hairs.

In each individual, the hair survive on average for 4 years, during which grow to about 1 cm per month. The fifth year, the hair falls and is replaced by a new one within 6 months.
Genetic baldness is caused inability of the body to produce new hairs and not by excessive loss of the same.

Both men and older women tend to lose the consistency and quantity of hair. Inherited baldness affects more men than women. About 25% of men begin losing hair by the age of 30 and 2 / 3 are bald or have an appearance of baldness by the age of 60.

surgery
stress

shampoo and drying with a hairdryer excessive

tumors in the skin and protuberances
fungus infections
hypothyroidism
sebaceous cyst

Next to common baldness, there are many other types of baldness, such as:

Telogen effluvium: hair loss caused by trauma such as chemotherapy, childbirth, surgery, poisoning, stress

Cicatricial alopecia: caused by lupus, folliculitis, etc..
